HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUSTIN
It is a thrill for your Mom and I to see the man you have grown up to be, fulfilling all our hopes and dreams for you when you were this little guy.

Rusty interviewing Jan
I mentioned all the volunteers that I had the honor of working with, but I did not mention a very important person in our group. Rusty, a reporter for the Virgina newspaper The Fredericksburg Free Lance Star. He was always working on his laptop, but when he was needed - a broken copystand, a lunch run, or encouragement to us all - Rusty was right there to deliver. He was working on a series of articles about the aftermath of Katrina. The first of the series was published yesterday and today's article about Operation Photo Rescue, please take some time and read these articles.

sign no sign
All along Beach Blvd. in Biloxi I would see a sign frame standing with no sign. There was no trace of a building, just a parking lot and the sign frame. It reminded me of watching video coverage of a war zone. I thought this was very sad. Here are more pictures from the trip from two very talented photojournalists: Val's pictures, and Mike's blog "It beats working for a living"

Lauren at copy stand
Day 3 - Saturday - OPR's last day of collection of damaged photos in Biloxi was very busy. Dave Ellis co-president of OPR said this was the most photos collected and photogrphed in all their visits to the area (and it has been 2 years since Katrina!). We were very busy all day long. Many of the people brought us treats - donuts, cookies, cupcakes and many other snacks and the photographers at the copy stands really appreciated the gift of kneeling pads for our knees.

Operation Photo Rescue in Biloxi - day 2
Stacks of photos that have been shot and will be given back to the people who brought them. After the restoration volunteers all around the world work to restore the photos, the families will receive a restored photograph in the mail. On the right is my copystand where I spent 13 hours yesterday. There are 2 more copystands where Lauren and Jan worked, also the other volunteers (Angie, Glenna, Michael, and Val) who took in the photographs from the families and the 3 administrators of OPR (Dave, Mike and Christine) -they all worked just as long and hard as I did. Here is a link for the local TV coverage: http://www.wlox.com/Global/story.asp?s=6980045

Operation Photo Rescue is a volunteer network of professional and amateur photographers, graphic designers and others whose mission is to repair family photographs damaged by natural disasters at no cost to the owners. OPR will be making a trip to Biloxi, MS August 22-27, 2007 (I am traveling there to assist them) in collecting more photographs damaged in hurricane Katrina. Even though Katrina happened 2 years ago the clean up continues. After an article appeared in the local newspaper, OPR was asked to come to Biloxi to help -- we are expecting a large turnout.

I found this little guy in our yard. He could not fly, lost his mother and was hiding. I hope his mom found him, I hope he learned to fly, I hope he had a good life. Many hopes for the bird . . . hopes for all of us also, an end to the war, an end to the deaths of our young people fighting for us over there. I have hopes for us all . . . may all your hopes and dreams come true.

Justin and I went to the ballgame last night. An amazing game - here is the story, a young pitcher shows all the promise in the world but has control problems. He keeps throwing wild pitches. He does not give up - he reinvents himself - he goes back to the minors and in several years he becomes an outfielder and a hitter. He now has a high batting average, he even hits home runs. He gets called up to the majors and tonight he played his first game. He was nervous at the start - strikes out his first two times at bat. He bats again, all 42,000 people in the stadium are hoping for good things for this young player, a hit, a walk - just not another strike out. He hit a 3 run home run. Congratulations Rick Ankiel.

Opps, regarding yesterdays post - it was just a light fixture taken with a time exposure. I must confess I am not above sensationalizing to gain blog readership. Today, I hope this picture of a palm on the beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic keeps you nice and cool.

ufo ? ? ?
I don't know if it is the early morning hours I have been arriving at work this week or the oppressive heat wave sweeping the region, but I saw something that made me pause this morning. a ufo ? ? ? I know what they will say . . . the heat is getting to him, he is a crazy man, he just wants to increase his blog readership! A tiny bead of sweat formed in my eye, I raised my trusty holga camera and here is the proof for my loyal blog readers (you know who you are) to witness.
